Kempner’s Symphony Orchestra attended and competed at the UIL Region 13 Concert and Sight-Reading competition at Austin High School on March 5th.

Cougars roar past Rangers for District Title
Before the season even started expectations were high for the KHS baseball team as they were ranked 16th in state and favored as the top team in district. After an intense and exciting closing week in district action the Cougars answered any doubters in grand fashion with a 13-3 victory over Clements to claim the district title.
“It feels awesome to win district,” Senior Justice Brown said. ”It is good to work as a family to represent our school well doing what we love on the field.”
With many of their prom dates donning gowns and waiting anxiously in the stands the Cougars quickly went to work. Josh Desoto got things rolling with a solo homerun but Clements answered back run for run through the third. In the fourth inning the Cougars pulled out to a 5-3 lead before unleashing an eight run fifth inning for the win.
Ruben Hancock drew a walk then Jordan Jones and Karen Patel bunted and reached on errors to load the bases for Brown. Brown doubled scoring all three runners and the Cougar attacked continued. Angel Deleon reached on a bunt, Nick Anderson delivered a single and Tanner Schuetz flied out. The barrage kept going as Desoto was hit by a pitch and Jorge Gutierrez and Ruben Hancock walked. Jones hit a blooper single to setup Patel knocking in the eight run of the inning to end the game.
Joseph Panalez pitched 4.1 innings for the win and Zach Tekrouri came in with runners on base and closed out the side for the save.
The victory gives the Cougars the number one seed in the playoffs this week and advances them to face off with Brazoswood
(the number four seed in 24-6A) in a best of three series starting Friday at 7 p.m. in Alvin. Game two will be played Saturday at 1 pm in Alvin and game three will follow 30 minutes after the first game ends.
The district title is even sweeter for the Cougars as they were forced into a playoff game to determine first place after the week ended in a three way tie with Travis and Clements. After falling to the Austin Bulldogs on Tuesday 6-4, KHS battled back on Friday for a 5-1 victory behind the strength of Karen Patel’s 14 strikeout outing and the bats of Anderson, Hancock and Schuetz to set up Saturday’s showdown.

While most seniors are counting down the days to graduation and trying to muster the motivation to get through AP exams, finals tests and class projects –your School President will make his quest to win a State UIL title in Prose Interpretation.
After dominating both district and regional competition with first places finishes Evan Rossi advances to State Competition at the University of Texas May 25-27th .
“Evan has an unequaled passion for acting. His hard work, perseverance and determination in competitive acting events since his freshman year has led him to become one of the best actors in the state and the nation,” debate coach Will Mason said.
Rossi has participated in all acting events, from Prose and Poetry reading to monologues to Duet acting with his long-time partner, Hoai My Ho. He has brought home accolade after accolade this year including taking second place in Dramatic Interpretation and third in Duo Interpretation with Hoai My Ho at the National Speech and Debate Association District Meet. He advances to Nationals in Duo Interpretation in June.
He has achieved the rank of “Premier Distinction” in the National Speech and Debate Association ranking in the top one percent of competitors. Rossi is ranked 35th among all speech and debater competitors in the state.
“While his record speaks for itself, Evan’s character has also made him one of the most liked and trusted competitors in the field,” Mason said. “His future in acting has the greatest potential to be one of the best.”
KHS was also represented at regional UIL competition by Priya Pai and Anupriya Gupta. Pai continued her UIL success in writing events advancing to regionals by placing second in editorials and third in newswriting at the district level. At regionals Pai medaled with sixth place in newswriting.
Gupta finished third in spelling at district and the entire KHS spelling team was an alternate for regionals. Nneoma Ome, Faith Borak and Sana Ismail rounded out the team. Gupta finished 17th at regionals. Matt Lively also placed at district finishing sixth in newswriting.

Area playoffs
The Cougars claimed two victories over Brazoswood Friday and Saturday to advance to the area round of playoffs starting Wednesday at 7:30 at Kempner.
Game one was not the Cougars prettiestgame
of the season by far but when things got tough KHS got even tougher. After a few costly errors the Cougars entered the 7th inning trailing 5-2 Friday night.
But Tanner Schuetz came through in clutch to aid the Cougars 9-6 comeback victory.
Angel Delon got things rolling with a single in the 7th , Nick Anderson walked and Schuetz's ripped a triple scoring both.Schuetz then scored on an error to tie things up.
Schuetz also took over mound duties in the 7th and
shutdown the Bucs with two strikeouts.
The Cougars attack continued in the eighth innings as they added four more runs.
The Bucs manage a run in the bottom of the 8th but with runners in scoring postion Schuetz got the ground out to
end the game.
Saturday the Cougars appeared
sharper and a four run fourth inning was all they need to finsh off the Bucs.
