Homecoming Game

By Ann Johnson

Last night, the Kempner Cougars (0-8) hosted the Austin Bulldogs (3-5) at Mercer Stadium in Kempner's homecoming game.

The final score of the game was 30-12, with Kempner losing to the Bulldogs. Kempner scored two touchdowns, one in the second quarter and another early the third quarter. Numerous penalties, interceptions and fumbles kept the Cougars from mounting a comeback against the Bulldogs.

Despite seeing their team fall, Cougar fans were highly festive throughout the game. Current students, along with alumni came out to support their fellow classmates and football team. The band, brigade and cheerleaders kept the crowd on their feet with continuous cheers and music. The homecoming game always has a way of bringing together the entire school and community into a show of spirit and comradeship.

The halftime show was the highlight of the night! Kempner's Marching Band and dance team, along with Austin's Marching Band and Angels dance team presented their field productions with perfection and poise. The crowd had a fun time watching each school perform and were supportive and engaged.

The Kempner Cougars have two more games until the end of the season. They have an away game at Hightower on Friday, November 1st. They will finish their season with a home game at Mercer against Clements on November 7th. Let's go Cougars!

2013-2014 Kempner High School
Boys Varsity Basketball Season Preview
By: Sohail Karani

As the Kempner Cougars tip-off the season they will be playing with a chip on their shoulders. Coming off of a season with a losing record of 12-18-0 and being ranked 190th in the state, they have something to prove. The big keys to helping them better that record is their continued improvement on offense paired up with a solid Defense. The temporary starting lineup for the cougars will be

Jessie Spearman, Gregory Johnson, Andy Tsai, Jordan Ward, Miles Ingram.

Strengths: This teams greatest asset is its quickness, and its cohesiveness on the Defensive side of the ball. They have great team defense, which is an affect of good coaching and tight chemistry. The cougars also have prime guard play along with key role players off the bench.

Weaknesses: Although Spearman and a few others are returning players, the Cougars lack experience. This season’s version of the Varsity team includes 3 sophomores and 4 juniors; this is a disadvantage at present but a future advantage because in 1-2 years those kids will be the experienced returning players. One of the team’s drawbacks is their district; they have 5 teams out of the 8 with winning records, filled by tough opponents in Travis, Bush, Clements, and Austin.

With aspirations of making the playoffs, the cougars will continue their improvement on offense and keep up their good work on Defense. Alongside goals of playoffs they are also trying to extend their winning record (8-2) against, school rivals, Austin High School. So far in this season they are 1-4-0 but there is more than enough time to make a comeback and make the playoffs.

Top Ten 2014 Sports Moments

By Kiran Asokan,Bilal Merai

  1. LeBron James vs. San Antonio Spurs- with Miami up 90-88, James hit a 17 foot jumper with 27 seconds left in the game, to secure the Heats second consecutive championship. That shot gave Miami a 4 point lead, and will go down as one of the greatest shots in NBA history. That jumper also defined LeBron’s legacy, and shut all the people up that called him the exact opposite of clutch and said he wouldn’t be able to lead his team to another championship.

  2. Kevin Ware comes back from injury-   On March 31, 2013, in the first half of a game against Duke; Ware landed awkwardly after attempting to block a three-point shot attempt and suffered a compound fracture to his right leg. Players and coaches on both teams were visibly shaken at the sight of the injury. Instead of his team, dwelling on his injury, they stepped up their game, and eventually won the NCAA Championship. Ware’s injury served as motivation for the rest of the team and because of that, they won.

  3. Ray Allen hits game tying 3 pointer- San Antonio’s players – Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili were each just 20 seconds away from what might have been their last chance at an NBA title (Duncan has won 4 championships with the Spurs; Parker and Ginobili each won three). The Spurs led Game 6 of the NBA finals, 95-92. If they could just stop the Heat from hitting a three-pointer, they could be raising the championship banner in Miami, and abruptly end LeBron James’ dream season, in which he won his second straight MVP award. James missed a three, but Chris Bosh jumped over two Spurs to grab the offensive rebound. (Duncan, one of the greatest rebounders of all-time, wasn’t in the game). Bosh dished the ball out to Ray Allen, the man who has hit more three-pointers than any other player in NBA history. Allen stepped behind the three-point line, and hit the corner shot, tying the game. The Heat won in overtime, and took the deciding game seven to clinch its second consecutive championship.

  4. Chicago Bears Touchdown pass- With 17 seconds left and no timeouts, QB Josh McCown threw a 30 yard pass to Alshon Jeffery for a huge lead against the Dallas Cowboys. Jeffery caught the football, while being defended tightly and still had the ability to jump up catch the ball, and land both feet inbounds to score the touchdown.

  5. Dwight Howards Debut with Rockets- After ending the 2012-2013 NBA season on a disappointed 4 game sweep against the Spurs, while playing for the Lakers, Howard decided to come to Houston, as a free-agent. In his first game as Houston Rocket, Dwight Pulled down a career high tying, 26 rebound’s along with 17 points. Dwight’s 26 rebounds, were most by a Rocket, since Charles Barkley had 33 rebounds in his Rockets Debut, back in 1997.

  6. Lebron James becomes first NBA player with 4 MVP’S- Before 2013, Lebron James had 3 other MVP’S from 2009, 2010, 2012. In 2013, he won his fourth MVP, and was beginning to be considered one of the greatest players in NBA history.

  7. Demarco Murray cuts to the chase- Running back #29 Demarco Murray cuts to the chase, slashing between linebackers as Tony Romo threw him an excellent pass for the touchdown. Great Offense movement through tough defense led to this eye-opening touchdown.

  8. Brandon Browner goes Touchdown to Touchdown- As the Denver Broncos lined up at the 1-yard line for their touchdown, one mistake changed it all. Somehow the Denver Broncos fumbled the ball, and CB Brandon Browner secures the football and runs 106 yards for the touchdown. His display of going from one end of the field to the other field, showed how difficult it is, to make a play like that.

  9. John Philips gets a lucky save to score a TD- In a game between the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers, the Cardinals lined up at the 1-yard line for their touchdown, but instead of automatically going straight to the touchdown, the Cardinals got the ball and everyone thought that the Cardinals had stopped the Chargers from getting a touchdown. But little did they know, that the Chargers defense ended helping the ball getting fumbled around, where it bounced to John Philips where he eventually scored a touchdown.

  10. Chris Touchdown Jukes- In a game between the Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins, RB #28 Chris Johnson got handed the football, and used his speed and agility to slash through defenders, while spinning around in every place possible, in order to score a touchdown, in which he eventually did.
